The average SA job search takes about 15 months

Pnet’s September 2026 Job Market Trends Report, covered by Lifestyle & Tech on 1 October, analysed 2.8 million employment records from people who started new jobs between 2022 and 2025. The headline finding: it takes around 15 months on average from the start of an active job search to beginning a new role.

That is not a failure of effort. In 2023 the average peaked at 17 months; by 2025 it had eased to 14 months. Sales roles move faster (about nine months in 2025), and building and construction, marketing, maintenance and admin also sit below the national average. Highly specialised posts in finance, engineering and business management often take 16 months or more. Portfolio managers, risk managers and solution architects can wait around 20 months.

Anja Bates, Head of Data at Pnet, put it plainly: plan career moves with realistic expectations, start early, stay visible, and keep your professional profile up to date. For recruiters, the report also challenges the habit of only searching candidates active in the last six months — many serious applicants are still looking well beyond that window.

Hundreds of government jobs opened this week

On 9 October 2026 the Department of Public Service and Administration published Public Service Vacancy Circular 36 of 2026. It lists posts across national and provincial departments — cleaners, drivers, clerks, data capturers, artisan assistants and professional roles — with entry points from Grade 8 and Grade 10 through Matric, TVET and tertiary qualifications.

Salaries for many of the entry and mid-level posts summarised from the circular range roughly from about R144 000 to R237 000 a year, depending on the level. Each vacancy has its own closing date and application method, so download the official circular, match the reference number, use the new Z83 form where required, and apply directly to the department named in the advert.

Tech hiring is selective — specialists still get the call

Local technology recruiters report a quieter appetite for generalist mid-level permanent developers, while demand for senior specialists in cloud and platform engineering, data, AI and machine learning, cybersecurity and DevOps remains firm. Hiring managers want a stronger commercial case before they open a headcount, and contractors in scarce skills still move.

Looking ahead to early 2027, expect leaner teams, fewer junior and mid-level openings, and premiums for people who can own complex, business-critical work. If you are a generalist developer or early-career IT graduate, stacking a clear specialism (cloud, security, data or applied AI) is how you stay employable.

Graduate programmes still open for class of 2026

Not every graduate door has closed. Engen’s 24-month Graduate Development Programme in Cape Town is accepting applications until 15 December 2026 for final-year students and recent graduates across HR, finance, marketing, engineering, supply chain, safety, operations, transport, legal, retail and property. Requirements include South African citizenship, a strong academic average (around 70%) and certified ID, qualifications and transcript.

Citi’s Johannesburg ICRM learnership for 2026 is also recruiting graduates with a strong undergraduate or master’s record. These programmes reward early, complete applications rather than last-minute uploads.

Globally, AI roles are booming — but remote is not a free pass

October 2026 AI job trackers show thousands of open roles across ML engineering, agents, LLMs, generative AI and cloud. One dataset of nearly 10,000 AI developer listings found about 27% fully remote, 17% hybrid and 55% on-site. Another broader sample put fully remote closer to 6%, with remote median pay often slightly below on-site equivalents.

Skills that keep appearing in ads include agents, LLMs, cloud, generative AI and distributed systems. Forward-deployed and applied AI roles — putting models into real client environments — are a growing slice of openings. For South African tech talent, remote global roles exist, but many still restrict applicants by country. A public portfolio of applied AI work beats waiting for a listing that may never accept an overseas applicant.

CVs still need to beat the bots — and sound like you

Forbes career writers keep returning to the same advice: a clean one-to-two-page resume tailored to each role, with measurable outcomes and keywords from the job ad, plus a LinkedIn profile that matches. Hiring managers notice when a CV reads like generic AI paste. Tighten wording with tools if you like, then rewrite so your own voice and real results show through.

Combine that with a short pitch and two or three STAR stories ready for interviews. In a market where searches run long, clarity beats volume of applications.

What this means for job seekers

Patience is not passive. Treat a long search as normal for specialised roles, but keep a weekly cadence: update your profile, apply to a realistic shortlist, and follow up. Watch Circular 36 and other DPSA releases if public service fits your path. If you are in tech or a graduate entering the market, pick a scarce skill and make it visible. And when you write your CV, sound like a person who has done the work — not a template.
