Occupational Hygiene Technologist

Valterra Platinum needs an Occupational Hygiene Technologist at Mogalakwena Mine near Mokopane, Limpopo. In this permanent Band 7 role, reporting to the Shaft Ventilation Engineer, you will identify, measure and help control workplace health hazards so the operation meets its occupational hygiene targets and legal requirements.

Key responsibilities:

Help perform occupational health risk assessments and survey workplaces for chemical, physical, ergonomic, biological and psychological hazards
Measure hazard levels with specialised instruments and sample airborne pollutants, fumes, gases, vapours and mists
Compare results with statutory exposure limits and national and international standards, and recommend controls using the hierarchy of controls
Run ergonomic surveys and manage risks in the potable water quality programme
Report progress against occupational hygiene targets to supervisors and management
Keep occupational hygiene standards, procedures, regulations and codes of practice up to date and followed
Work with the risk management team and the occupational hygienist on operational risk assessments
Requirements:

Degree in occupational hygiene, environmental health, physiology or equivalent
Registration with the Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene at technologist level
Chamber of Mines Certificate in Mine Environmental Control (Intermediate)
BSc Honours in occupational hygiene or physiology, and associate membership of the Mine Ventilation Society, are advantageous
2 years’ occupational hygiene experience in mining and/or processing, including running an occupational hygiene programme
Valid EB/Code 08 driver’s licence
